Things that you will need to make your own cupcake bouquet
- Cupcakes, at least 8 pieces
- Butter cream frosting in different colors, chilled
- Opaque, sturdy vase or a flower pot
- Cabbage head
- Pearl cake accents (optional)
- Toothpicks
- Ribbons and colored tissue paper for trimmings
- Circular cardboard cutouts to fit the base of your cupcakes

Step 1: Prepare your base
Depending on the size of your flowerpot or vase, remove the top layers of the cabbage until it snugly fits over the opening of your base. Take note that at least half of the cabbage should show through the opening since this is where you will be anchoring your cupcakes. Weigh the pot or vase with pebbles if the container is high or use a low flowerpot for ensure that the bouquet will remain stable.
Step 2: Prepare the cupcake bouquet anchor
Take your colored tissue paper and wrap it around the surface of the cabbage. Choose a neutral color like green so that even if the tissue paper shows through the design, it will still look natural.
Step 3: Assemble your cupcake flower bouquet
Now this is where the fun begins! Visualize the look of the cupcake flower bouquet that you want to achieve. You can even have a print out of a floral design that you want to use as an inspiration. When you are ready to place the cupcakes onto the cabbage head, poke the center of a cardboard cutout with a toothpick until the toothpick is halfway through the board. Stick your cupcake onto the center of the cardboard cutout. You may need to place two or three more toothpicks for larger, heavier cupcakes. 1” cupcakes are fine with just a single toothpick.
Start placing your cupcake “flowers” onto the cabbage head, beginning at the center top portion and working your way outwards and downwards, making sure that the toothpick inserts well into the cabbage head. When you are done, frost the cupcakes with the buttercream frosting. You can do this in different colors or build a single color bouquet with embellishments like pearl accents or glittery sprinkles.
Step 4: Fill the gaps
Cut square pieces of colored tissue paper to stuff between the cupcakes. Fold the tissue paper squares into triangles and make sure that you stuff them with the outer corners sticking out, mimicking leaves in a floral arrangement.
Step 5: Decorate the base
Wrap a sheet of colored tissue paper around your cupcake bouquet’s base and secure with a ribbon.

Thanks for the info, cute site!
I had no id ea that there are cupcake bouquets out there. Financially speaking what is the return on selling a bouquet? and has this become a new trend? Thank you
Hello Susan and thanks for stopping by!
Cupcake bouquets are definitely an emerging trend these days..
Bouquets sell anywhere from 10-50$ upwards depending on size and quality. If you choose to make the cupcakes yourself, the return should be quite generous. But even if you buy the cupcakes, you should expect a nice return as long as you invest in styling and decor.
Ok, I don’t want to sound stupid, but what exactly is a cabbage head? Is it real cabbage?
Thanks in advance!
Hi Yasmeen,
A cabbage head is indeed a real cabbage, although often that term refers to less suitable things..
I am looking for the picket fence cupcake holders on sticks used for bouquets. Any ideas?
